The Nat 20

There are few things that are as well known in Dungeons and Dragons than the natural 20. This iconic number finds its way into everything related to DnD. When you roll a dice, you always hope and hope some more for a natural 20. It is the number that allows you to do countless things. When you are in combat and you roll a natural 20, it is seen as a guaranteed hit and you deal double damage. But what if I told you that the nat 20 is not always a guarantee?

In my time playing, I have learned that there are actually times when a nat 20 does not guarantee a success. Some of you may be wondering how this is possible. It's the best number you can possibly get.

An example of this would be if an ant went against a hill giant. The ant rolls a strength check to throw the hill giant. It rolls a 20. Unfortunately, the ant is not going to succeed on throwing the hill giant. It would be really cool and awesome, but it isn't something that can be done. In this case, it's just another number.

Just remember, there are times when a natural 20 is not enough.
